I am very proud to read at broadband.gov that my friend

Dr. David S. Isenberg has joined the broadband team as an Expert Advisor, and will be working on how physical infrastructure choices facilitate or impede policy options.  David is best known to the telecom policy world as the author of the 1997 essay, The Rise of the Stupid Network.  When Dale Hatfield was Chief of the FCC’s Office of Engineering and Technology, he called The Rise of the Stupid Network “one of three works that changed my perception of the telecommunications industry.”

I’m hard pressed to think of a bad time to remind myself about David Isenberg’s Rise of the Stupid Network when I read news such as this next bit. (Hey, I got the original “cease and desist” notice from AT&T for posting it on my server when it first appeared.) Hewlett-Packard Co. launched Monday a new network planning and design architecture that seeks to rewrite the rules of campus network design. …

“We think you need to put more control and functionality at the edge of the network so you can immediately provision the right kind of control for a broader range of applications. You need to manage mobility from a wireless perspective at the edge where users connect,” he said.

Most of the article reads like an HP press release, but I think their direction is notable.
